It is quoted per home because the cost depends on the gas supply, bottle position, pipe run, wall build-up and access on site, and the work must be done by a SAQCC-registered gas installer who issues a Certificate of Conformity. Flueless Gas Fireplaces — Your Questions Answered
Are flueless gas fireplaces safe indoors?
Yes, when the unit is correctly sized for the room and installed to SANS gas regulations by a SAQCC-registered installer. Every flueless unit we supply has a flame failure device that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out, and the models on this page use clean-burn technology with very low emissions. Flueless fireplaces release their combustion products into the room, so the room needs the ventilation opening specified for that model and the fireplace must not be undersized or oversized for the space. They are not intended for use in bathrooms or bedrooms below the volumes stated in the model's manual.
How much does it cost to run a gas fireplace per hour in South Africa?
Running cost depends on the burner output and the LPG price, which changes monthly and by region. As a rule of thumb, an LPG fireplace burns roughly 0.07 kg of gas per hour for each kW of output, so a 9kW unit on full burn uses about 0.6 kg per hour and a 14kW unit about 1 kg per hour. At an LPG price of around R35 to R45 per kg that works out to roughly R22 to R28 per hour for a 9kW unit at full output. Most units are run on a lower setting once the room is warm, which reduces that figure considerably.
Do flueless gas fireplaces need a chimney or any installation?
No chimney or flue is required — that is the point of a flueless unit, and it is why they suit apartments, renovations and homes with no existing hearth. They still need installation: a gas supply and regulator, a certified pipe run to the fireplace, correct clearances, and the room ventilation stated in the model manual. Freestanding stoves need the least work because they only need a gas connection. Wall-mounted and built-in models also need the wall or opening prepared to the unit's dimensions.
What size room can a flueless gas fireplace heat?
Heating capacity is quoted in cubic metres, not square metres, because ceiling height matters. The models on this page range from smaller inserts up to units rated for 420m³, with the 9kW SAfire A.I. rated to 280m³, an 11kW unit to about 300m³ and a 14kW unit to about 420m³. As a guide, allow roughly 1kW for every 25 to 30 cubic metres in a reasonably insulated home, and more for double-volume spaces, large glazed areas or open-plan layouts. Give us your room dimensions and we will confirm the correct output rather than guessing.
How much does a flueless gas fireplace cost installed?
The units on this page run from R8,995 for an entry-level flueless drop-in firebox to R80,700 for the largest premium architectural models, all including VAT. Installation is quoted separately per home because it depends on the gas supply, bottle position, pipe run and wall build-up on site. A straightforward freestanding installation with a short pipe run is at the lower end, while a built-in wall unit needing a longer certified pipe run and building work costs more. Ask for a quote and we will price the unit and the installation as two clear line items.
Gas vs wood fireplace — which is cheaper to run?
Wood is usually cheaper per unit of heat bought, but gas is more efficient at delivering that heat into the room. A modern flueless gas fireplace puts up to 99% of the energy into the room because nothing goes up a chimney, while a wood fire loses a large share of its heat through the flue. Gas also has no wood to buy, store, or carry, no ash to clear and no chimney sweeping. Over a season the running costs end up close for most homes, and gas wins on convenience, instant heat and control.
